Cedar Lake Lodge

WAGS Pet Therapy teams began visiting Cedar Lake Lodge last year, and they have a wonderful story to share! Our Roving Reporter, Julie Hines, the Wagazine Editor and Chief, Christine Anderson, and our Photographer, Shannon Wells of Leigh Photography were privileged to follow them on a visit so we could share this amazing experience with you. Cedar Lake was founded in 1970 and began intensive support for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) at Cedar Lake Lodge in November 1974. Since then, Cedar Lake has expanded to include community-based residential living and support, now supporting 254 individuals in 31 locations in Jefferson, Oldham, and Henry counties. Cedar Lake proudly supports individuals with IDD through the entire adult spectrum of their life, and, as a result, the average waiting list for intermediate care facility support is from 8 to 10 years. The organization provides non-residence support through the Cedar Lake Enrichment Center (CLEC), an adult day training center. The enrichment center offers a variety of activities that assist with socialization to build and maintain connections and friendships. Additionally, CLEC incorporates a variety of experiences with vocational training and programming specific to physical and emotional wellness.
Cedar Lake also offers community-based services including homemaker services, personal assistance, community access, and supported employment. Jill Williams & Paxton, Jean Glenn & Sadie, Anita Kotheimer & JB Lee Look, director of therapeutic services, was responsible for implementing the partnership with WAGS. Lee described his first encounter with Jill Williams and her very large Newfoundland, Paxton, as “a little worrisome.” His worries quickly abated when he witnessed the interactions between this gentle giant and the individuals supported at Cedar Lake Lodge. After that initial meeting, Jill and Paxton were joined by Anita Kotheimer with her poodle, JB, and Jean Glenn with her English Cream Golden Retriever, Sadie.
